The “Unrealistic” and “Oppressive” Christian Ideal

ChelseaPro Life1 Comment

I just love it when people who don’t believe in God not only tell Christians their morals are wrong, but also come up with their own ideas about what God “probably” really thinks…umm…you know…if He existed. Check out “Nunly”‘s post NOW I’M OPPRESSED AND SEXUALLY DIVORCED FROM REALITY? in which she hilariously rips apart a HuffPo article by Rob Asghar (who may still believe in God, I can’t tell. But begins one of his arguments saying, “if God exists…”) doing exactly that regarding Christians’ “idealized notion of sex and relationships.”

Asghar’s problem is that he looks at the fallen world and all our disordered desires and thinks that’s the way things are supposed to be. Even many Christians make this mistake, but, as Christ came to tell us, “in the beginning it was not so” (Mt. 19:8) Christ came to call us back to the purity and freedom of our origins, when man and woman saw each other “rightly” – with a pure heart – and were obedient to the laws of nature and nature’s God. This is not oppression, but freedom from our disordered sexual desires. No, it’s not easy. We are still fallen and prone to sin. That is why Christ also sent His Holy Spirit to give us the grace to resist temptations or pick ourselves back up when we fall.

As to the claim that the Christian view of human sexuality is essentially some pie-in-the sky ideal with no basis in reality – not in today’s world, anyway. It should be noted that John Paul II based his understanding and writings about sex and relationships, not only on Scripture, but also on decades of pastoral experience – working closely with married and engaged couples- and a careful observation of the sexual revolution that unfolded in his time.

The world may be a radically different place than when He walked on the earth, but the human heart is always seeking Christ Who is the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb. 13:8). His commands are always true and always lead the way to lasting peace and happiness.

God Bless All Adoptive Parents!

Adoptive parents? Is that right? Adopting parents? Parents who adopt? Anyway…I finally watched “The Blind Side” last night. Great movie – very life affirming – and the best part is it’s actually true! Here is a good mini doc. about Michael Oher (who, BTW, helped Ole Miss give my Mighty Gators their only defeat in their 2008 Championship season) – in case you want to know the real people behind the movie:

God bless Leigh Anne and the Tuohy family for all that they did to give “big Mike” a bright future and, more importantly, a loving family to call his own.

Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.
Mother Teresa

Said Sandra Bullock in her Oscar acceptance speech for Best Actress for her excellent portrayal of Leigh Anne in The Blind Side:

…I would like to thank what this film is about for me, which are the moms that take care of the babies and the children no matter where they come from. Those moms and parents never get thanked.

Yes, thank God for all mothers! Those who choose life for their own children and, especially, those who can and choose to share their love with a child in need.

Just to show there’s no hard feelings, here’s another good interview with Oher on the Gator defeat and his then NFL Draft prospects (Shep’s a Rebel? Say it aint so!). Oher now plays for the Baltimore Ravens: http://video.foxnews.com/v/3929055/cinderella-story

CBS Does ESCR Puff Piece

ChelseaEmbryonic Stem Cell Research, Pro Life1 Comment

Here’s something we haven’t talked about in a while. I don’t watch the news, so I am thankful to a friend of mine for alerting me in a message on Facebook last week that CBS had aired a favorable report on embryonic stem cell research. Here’s video of the report:

Watch CBS News Videos Online

It’s your basic MSM ESCR puff piece – no big surprise there. But because this is, sadly, where most Americans get their “facts” about stem cell research a few points are worth addressing:

1.) It is interesting, as News Busters points out, that they didn’t at all mention that even some people find human ESCR morally objectionable. Not sure if pretending that there are is not even the slightest debate on the ethics of ESCR is a new media tactic for garnering more ESCR support, or what. But I’ve never seen even the most pro ESCR story leave out that not-very-insignificant fact, even as just an aside.

2.) I noticed that they managed to slip in the pharmaceutical connection to ESCR when they mentioned the potential for testing drugs “in the safety of a petri dish, before trying them on patients.” Nevermind the fact that what they’re testing those drugs on are tiny human beings. For the most part, the general public has been sold on the idea that using and destroying human embryos was necessary to cure disease and help paralyzed people walk again, but that’s not all they have in mind for this research. Indeed, the real future, some would say, lies not in regenerative medicine, but drug testing and monitoring the progression of certain diseases and body parts.

3.) The report mentions that Geron Corp. will begin the first FDA-approved trial of ESC use in humans later this year. First of all, Geron makes this announcement every year and every year they fail to follow through (thank God!). Secondly, that “FDA-approved” trial is actually being held up by the FDA because of complications with preliminary animal studies.

4.) Dr. Kessler should know that if he really wants to see his daughter walk again, he’s looking in the wrong place. Adult stem cells are light-years ahead of ESCs in this area, helping several human patients regain feeling and movement and progress continues to be made. See here, here, here, here, here and here.

5.) Finally, and this one is most infuriating, at the end of his report, Dr. Jon LaPook tells Katie Couric:

Even if everything goes right, stem cell based treatments won’t be widely available for years. Still, this may be one of those rare instances in medicine when the hype is actually deserved.

“The hype is actually deserved?” Seriously??? Not one human being has benefited from any kind of embryonic stem cell treatment, ever! And any limited success in animal studies is tainted by the cells’ propensity to become cancerous or form deadly tumors and cysts. What makes this statement worse is that, though it was not mentioned in this piece, the media, and some scientists, typically cannot mention adult stem cell research without highlighting the supposed “drawbacks” (which they’re also wrong about) to using those cells even though they’ve been proven to be safe and effective for use in human beings. In fact, they’ve even gone so far as to warn people not to get their hopes up when they hear of human beings benefiting from non-embryonic stem cell treatment.

In the message I received from my friend he noted:

by the end of the story anyone who couldn’t follow the jumps would believe that Pres. Obama was saving lives by his change of policy.

This, I suspect, was the real goal of the story in the first place.

If this report tells us anything, it’s that the stem cell issue is not dead – no matter what Dr. Oz says. Lack of positive results and ethical alternatives aren’t going to persuade all researchers to turn away from research using human embryos, as I said, there are plenty of other things they would like to use those human embryos for besides regenerative medicine. I know all the pro-life focus seems to be on health care these days, but let’s not lose sight of the other serious threats to human life.

The Annunciation, A Pro-Life Feast Day!

ChelseaPro Life, ReligionLeave a Comment

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary and announced that she had found favor with God and would conceive and bear a son who would be called the Son of the Most High. This day calls to mind two very specific moments which correspond with the culture of life.

The AnnunciationThe first is Mary’s response to the Angel’s message. Imagine that you are a young girl – roughly between the ages of 12 and 15 – not yet married and an angel of the Lord informs you that you shall be with child.

This surely was not something that she would have ever expected and most likely did not understand at the time. It was also likely to cause her and her family great shame and scandal. But Mary, being “full of grace”, surrendered humbly to God’s will saying, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word,” (Lk 1:38).

By accepting this precious gift of life, Mary become not only the Mother of God, but a supreme example to all mothers. Mary’s role as the Mother of God reveals the dignity and sacredness of maternity. May all pregnant women imitate Our Lady’s gracious acceptance of new life and all women have recourse to this perfect example of authentic femininity.

Secondly, Mary’s fiat marks the exact moment of the incarnation, the Word Made Flesh. By the Incarnation, Christ, the Son of God, intimately united Himself to the entire human race and revealed, in the words of JP II, the incomparable value of every human person. Not only did Christ elect to take on our human nature, becoming like us in all things but sin, but he chose to begin his life on earth as the weakest and The Annunciationmost defenseless among us, an unborn child.

Because of this saving event we realize the splendor of all human life – including the unborn child and the unformed embryo. “[O]nly in the mystery of the incarnate Word does the mystery of man take on light” (Gaudium et Spes 22). Let us pray on this day that such innocent life may once again be preserved and protected in our Nation through the intercession of this Immaculate Mother, Patroness of our Land.

Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel (Is. 7:14)

The Annunciation – Luke 1:26-38
In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

Life Before Party

ChelseaPro Life3 Comments

Glad to see a couple of level-headed responses to this week’s great pro-life Democrat betrayal. First, Thomas Peters writes, and I agree:

I know we’re all stinging after Bart Stupak’s betrayal last Sunday (I am), but I think those who are now claiming, in the heat of the moment, that there is “no such thing as a pro-life Democrat” are making a mistake.

Though the most outspoken of all of them collapsed under pressure and took several others with him, there were still a few who stood their ground and we should not belittle their loyalty to the unborn by now declaring the “myth” of the pro-life Democrat.

Writes Jill Stanek:

There is still a remnant of principled pro-lifers in the Democratic Party. This week just saw the wheat separated from the chaff.

Maybe they’re fewer in number than we would like, but pro-life Democrats do exist – and we need them (see paragraph 2)! just as much as they desperately need our support and our prayers that they will do the right thing when pressured by the pro-death leadership of their party.

Peters also rightly notes that the Republicans’ house is not-so clean, either. They, too, though in a smaller number, have their fair share of not-so totally pro-life lawmakers, if at all, and anti-life pressure is not unique to the Democrat Party leadership. Here in Missouri, for example, our very pro-business Republican leadership is in bed with pro-cloning biotech industry in our state. Not only did they persuade our pro-life Republican Senators to dismiss a State ban on human cloning in favor of “party-loyalty” and protecting their pro-cloning Republican Governor, but they continue to appropriate State money to these cloning-friendly institutions while rejecting protective language or other alternatives to ensure that the money is not spent on unethical research (research that is now a constitutional right in our State thanks to “Amendment 2” in 2006).

“Pro-life Republican”, “pro-life Democrat”, we need them both and must continue to encourage both to make the protection of all innocent human life a priority.

I like this quote from Archbishop Chaput’s book Render Unto Caesar (p.4)

Party loyalty is a dead end. It’s a lethal form of laziness. Issues matter. Character matters. Acting on principle matters.

TOB Tuesday: TOB for Tykes

ChelseaSex, Sexuality, TOB TuesdayLeave a Comment

While I do not agree that 5 year olds need to learn about homosexuality or masturbation and other such things, I also do not think it’s harmful to ground our children, even from a young age, in a proper understanding of human sexuality – what our bodies are made for, why we are created as male and female, etc… This series of books looks like an excellent alternative to what some – even Catholic! – schools want to teach our (very) young people about sexuality. I’m sure it’s not based on the writings of John Paul II, but it looks pretty solid. (h/t to Love Undefiled)

    The God’s Design for Sex Series

Book 1: The Story of Me

With candid, age-appropriate language and realistic illustrations, The Story of Me explains: * God’s love and the goodness of all He has made * The nurturing family as God’s context for love * Why God wants each baby to have both a mommy and a daddy * The specialness of being made a boy or a girl * Proper names for private body parts Spend a few special moments with your child and The Story of Me , sharing the stories of God’s wonderful love and the marvelous body that is His special gift!

Book 2: Before I Was Born

Before I Was Born explains sex as a special gift God gives to a husband and wife and covers such topics as: 1) Why God made boys’ and girls’ bodies different; 2) God’s plan for loving marriages and families; 3) The basic facts about intercourse, presented in the context of marital love and intimacy; 4) Conception and fetal development; and 5) Childbirth and breastfeeding. Created to answer the questions inevitably asked by young children, Before I Was Born will help you give your child a vital head start in understanding God’s intended purpose for procreation and sex.

Book 3: What’s the Big Deal: Why God Cares About Sex

What’s the Big Deal? explains the basic facts about sex and such related issues as: 1) Why God made adults so that they want to have sex; 2) Why God designed sex to be shared only within marriage; 3) What God actually says about sex in the Bible; 4) The amazing changes ahead of you during puberty; and 5) How to respond when you feel sexual pressure from peers, TV shows, movies, and magazines.

Book 4: Facing the Facts: The Truth About Sex and You

You’ll learn about: 1) The role of puberty in the development of sexuality; 2) How girls’ and boys’ bodies change, both inside and out; 3) Exactly how a woman gets pregnant and gives birth; 4) Why God wants you to save sex for marriage; 5) Love and dating: How relationships mature; and 6) Tough answers to some tough problems. Your body and its sexual nature are beautiful and exciting gifts from God that He wants you to understand and appreciate.

This is “sex education” that respects God’s design for sex and the human person and it can start early. Beginning with a range from 4-8 yrs. old, each book has suggested age levels, but only you can determine what your child can handle – intellectually, spiritually. All books are meant to be read together with your child(ren) even as the series progresses and they become (pre)teens. And I think that’s important. Even if you send your child to a good Catholic school that teaches proper sex education, it’s not a bad idea to continue that education at home. Unlike math or science, learning about sexuality is learning about the very purpose of one’s creation and the meaning of our most intimate desires. Parents should to be a part of this discovery process with their children.

Let Nothing Disturb Thee

ChelseaPro Life3 Comments

For the last 24 hours, I have heard from several pro-lifers who are (understandably) sad, mad, defeated and afraid after the House’s late night approval of the not-so life affirming Senate health care bill yesterday. I wanted to write out my own thoughts about the bill’s passage, about the Stupak betrayal and the phony abortion funding compromise. But this is all I can seem to come up with in response:

Praise the LORD, my soul; I shall praise the LORD all my life, sing praise to my God while I live.
I Put no trust in princes, in mere mortals powerless to save.
When they breathe their last, they return to the earth; that day all their planning comes to nothing.
Happy those whose help is Jacob’s God, whose hope is in the LORD, their God,
The maker of heaven and earth, the seas and all that is in them, Who keeps faith forever,
secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free;
the LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD raises up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous.
The LORD protects the stranger, sustains the orphan and the widow, but thwarts the way of the wicked.
The LORD shall reign forever, your God, Zion, through all generations!
-Psalm 146

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me….My kingdom does not belong to this world” (John. 14:1, 18:36)

Let nothing disturb thee,
Nothing affright thee;
All things are passing;
God never changeth;
Patient endurance
Attaineth to all things;
Who God possesseth
In nothing is wanting;
Alone God sufficeth.
-St. Theresa of Avila

And finally:
Do not grow slack in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer! (Romans 12:11-12)

Good Marriage Advice

ChelseaFamily, Love, MarriageLeave a Comment

Some good advice you can add to Monday’s post on marriage:

Husband and wife will be happy together if they learn to overcome selfishness and love of comfort, if they avoid seeking personal compensations for every sacrifice they make, and if they know how to give without expecting anything in return. To achieve all this, it will greatly help them to remember that whatever they do for the love of their spouse is reckoned by Christ as actually done to himself (Mt. 25:50) Sacrifice born willingly is the key to a happy marriage. (Marriage: A Path to Sanctity, p. 37)

Down to the Wire

ChelseaAbortion, Activism, Health Care, Legislation, video6 Comments

I looks like the House is getting set to vote on health care reform this weekend! The Susan B. Anthony List has a good ad targeting on the fence pro-life Democrats

I have talked to some people who are still confused as to how, exactly, the bill is considered pro-abortion or anti-life. The American Papist offers this 150 word explanation from American Principles Project contributor James Bell:

The Senate Health Care Reform Bill spends taxpayer dollars on health care plans that fund abortions, spends $12 billion on Community Health Centers that Planned Parenthood will be eligible for, gives the Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius the right to declare abortion as a pre-existing condition to be covered under every health care plan in the federal exchange under the Mikulski Amendment, eliminates conscience protections for insurance providers and fails to ensure them for doctors and nurses, trip-wires the direct funding of abortions if external legislation is repealed, and forces everyone including men and old women to pay at least $1 (to be raised under jurisdiction of Congress) to a fund for “reproductive rights” that will cover 100% of the cost for anyone who gets elective abortions. To say that the Senate Health Care Reform Bill is the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade is an understatement.

National Right to Life has a more detailed analysis.

I’ve been having a hard time keeping track of the WHIP count as it bounces back and forth. I have a feeling that, among those “on the fence,” we won’t know who’s solidly where until they actually vote. So we just need to make our phone calls, pray and trust in God’s will.

“Most merciful Jesus, I beseech You through the intercession of Your dearest Mother who nurtured You from childhood, bless my native land. I beg You, Jesus, look not on our sins, but on the tears of little children, on the hunger and cold they suffer. Jesus, for the sake of these innocent ones, grant me the grace that I am asking of You for my country.” (St. Faustina)

May the most just, the most lovable, and the most high Will of God be done, be fulfilled, be praised and exalted in all things forever. Amen.

Lucky to Be Alive

ChelseaAbortion, Activism, Pro Life1 Comment

Except for Newsweek, the world is beginning to take note of the youthfulness of the pro-life movement. Not only are the majority of marchers at the March for Life in D.C. every year high school and college aged, but lately we have even seen pre-teens get in on the pro-life activism action. No doubt this baffles some people who see abortion as a “reproductive choice” that gives young people (who just can’t control their sexual desires) the “freedom” to have meaningless sex without limit or consequence. Who wouldn’t want that?! But one commenter on this post at CMR perfectly explains why young people aren’t exactly fans of abortion:

When you realize that a significant portion of your generation was killed off because of someone elses selfishness, it tends to have an effect on you…

Many in my age group realize that being born after 1973 means we are lucky to be alive.

    null

It’s pretty sobering to know that when I was conceived, my mother had the legal choice to have me killed before I was born. I am certain that this is why a growing number of people my age and younger are so actively pro-life. Any one of us could easily have been one of those 50 MILLION children who have lost their lives to abortion in the last 37 years. So it is not hard for us to see that children conceived today need our voices and our help.
