App Lets Unborn Child Choose His/Her Own Name

name-app.pngHaving trouble deciding on a name for your baby? Why not let the little one choose for him/herself? A new app ($.99 for iPhone and iPod Touch) randomly generates thousands of baby names while monitoring a baby’s movements in the womb. Any kick detected by the program will then stop the generator at the baby’s chosen name. Then the parents can accept their child’s “choice” or dismiss the name and start their search again. Parents can narrow their search either by gender or by creating a list of favorites to choose from.

Pretty cute idea. Then if the child complains about his/her name later in life you can tell them that they only have themselves to blame! Visit kicktopick.com

  1. This is insulting and a disgrace to the dignity of the child and to the duties of his parents!

A name shouldn’t be treated like it’s nothing. A name is an identity. It deserves human respect.

  2. Nick, I think you are stretching yourself here. it’s nothing more than a novelty and a tool to use in trying to decide a child’s name.

I agree with you that naming a child is a serious undertaking, but this app isn’t forcing anyone to use it carelessly. If someone were to only use this app and random chance to name a child, it’s no different than if they had purchased a name book, and randomly flipped to a page and blindly pointed to a name.

This app seems like a fun way for a couple to try to find new names to consider, and only crosses into the crass, when that was already the person’s intent.

This isn’t a matter of blind choice, this is a matter of human respect. But I suppose a culture steeped in pride can’t understand human respect, nor can those who adhere to it. Thanks be to God for the Church who opposes such disgraceful taste!

The Holy Name of Jesus Christ reveals human respect, and so the dignity of choosing a proper name – NOT choosing blindly as if a name doesn’t matter. It is a matter of human respect for human dignity, not a matter of “Well, this name sounds fun!” or “Hey, let’s choose one at random!” or even “Let’s name the baby after the dog!”

  4. Nick, I really think you’re taking this thing a little too seriously. As Travis said, it’s a novelty. It’s nothing to get worked up over and it’s definitely not something that the Church would oppose.
